Eleonore de Ruuk

COLLECTIONS A/W 09-10

The new a/w 09-10 collection of dutch label Eleonore de Ruuk with the title “Lanzarique” is inspired by modern artist César Manrique. Manrique was an architect, painter, sculptor and one of the pioneers of modern art in Spain. He lived on the Canary island of Lanzarote where he created many artworks while having a great influence on the protection of both nature and culture of the island.

The collection for both men and women is very geometrical, inspired by Manrique’s geometrical abstract style. The artist Manrique, whose work was the source of inspiration for this new winter collection, designed and realised a lot of wind mobiles on the island Lanzarote. The shapes of these constructions are translated into the print and shapes in the collection. Black thread represents the black volcanic island Lanzarote. It is used in original ways in the women’s collection, going through tunnels of divided parts of dresses and vests, pockets of skirts and dresses, pouches in sweaters, skirts and dresses but also through hoods. In all of the items the cord is revealed by cut-outs which accentuates the geometrical appearance of this collection. Fluent pleats give a nice balance to the geometrical shapes in the collection.

In the men’s as well as in the women’s collection comfort is created through the use of sweat fabrics, jerseys, hoods, prints, and the use of pockets and pouches in pants and with the women also in skirts, vests and dresses. Elegance in the women’s collection is created by using soft fabrics like wool, deep necklines and fluent pleats. The unisex hooded backpack comes back, but this time with a print and an attached scarf. In the men’s collection the geometrical aspect comes across by a varied use of divided parts in sweaters, pouches of sweaters and pants.

The print consists of a construction of lines and divided parts in a circle which together shape a camel, grasshopper and fish. These animals are characteristic for the island Lanzarote and were often used by Manrique in his artworks. The women’s and men’s collections both have the same print. In the women’s collection the print is placed on the front of tops which in combination with is revealed by a cut-out in some of the dresses, on the back of tops and vests, bags, pouches of dresses, skirts and hoods. In the men’s collection the print is often placed cut off on a part of a pouch, pocket or trouser-leg. But also in totality on T-shirts, scarfs and hoods.

The main colours for this collection are different shades of grey and blue, brown and beige. Accent colours are green, black and white. Fabrics used are sweat fabrics, jerseys, woven and knitted wool, soft woven cotton and denim.
